KROSSFIRE

Das Debütalbum der Bulgaren von KROSSFIRE aus dem Jahre 2012 hatte es mir damals echt angetan und schon damals hatte ich die Möglichkeit der Band ein paar Informationen zu entlocken. Nun steht uns das zweite Album „Shades of Darkness“ ins Haus, daher war es wieder an der Zeit für mich mich nochmal genauer bei Bandchef und Sänger Dimo nach dem Album und KROSSFIRE zu erkundigen.

J.P: Hallo Dimo, vielen Dank das du mir ein paar Fragen zu eurem neuen Album und zu euch selbst als Band beantwortest. Wir haben ja schon 2012 im Zuge eures Debütalbums miteinander gesprochen. Erzähl doch mal wie ist es euch denn in den letzten Jahren so ergangen, was habt ihr gemacht?

D.P: Die letzten Jahren waren sehr ereignisreich und arbeitsam zu gleich. Nach dem wir “Learning to Fly” veröffentlicht hatte stieg unser Fan Anzahl gewaltig an. Wir spielten einige Konzerte,nicht nur in Bulgarien, sondern auch auch in Griechenland und Polen. Das Größte bis heute für uns war das wir für DEEP PURPLE in unserer Heimatstadt Plovdiv vor 15.000 Fans eröffnen durften. Zwischenzeitlich hatten wir mit den Arbeiten an unseren zweiten Album “Shades of Darkness” begonnen.

J.P: Zurückblickend wie zufrieden seit ihr mit „Learning to Fly“ und hat es euch als Band bekannter gemacht?

D.P: Wir sind auf jeden Fall sehr zufrieden mit “Learning to Fly”! Es war unser Startschuss. Wir bekamen viele tolle Rückmeldungen dazu aus der ganzen Welt und viele Metalfans wurden auf uns aufmerksam. Mit unserem ersten Album fanden wir unseren Musikstil den wir nun mit dem zweiten Album noch weiter ausbauen und verfeinern wollen.

J.P: Habt ihr eigentlich auch viel live gespielt im Zuge der Veröffentlichung eures Debütalbums? Spielt ihr gerne live?

D.P: Selbstverständlich spielen wir gerne live, es ist das Größte für uns! Jedes Jahr haben wir ca. 30 Konzerte überall auf der Welt. Letztes Jahr sind wir zum ersten Mal eingeladen worden auf einem großen Biker Event in Polen zu spielen.

J.P: Gehen wir nun mal etwas näher auf euer neues Album „Shade of Darkness“ ein. Kannst du uns etwas über den Aufnahmeprozess sagen? Von wann bis wann habt ihr daran gearbeitet? Warum hat das Ganze so lange gedauert? : - )

D.P: Also der gesamte Prozess, von den ersten Ideen ab, benötige so ca. 2 ½ Jahre. Direkt nach dem Release von “Learning to Fly” 2012 sammelten wir schon Ideen für das neue Album. Dieses sammeln war im Sommer 2014 beendet. Dann begannen wir die Pre Produktion des Albums, welche sehr wichtig für uns war, da wir erstmal selbst hören wollten wie die Songs klingen und was wir noch verbessern können. Danach nahmen wir ein erstes Demo auf und analysierten nochmal jeden Song. Ende September waren wir dann soweit ins Studio zu gehen. Erneut waren wir im F.1 Sound Studio und nahmen das Album mit Vasil Valchev auf. Die Aufnahmen nahmen dann auch nochmal 5 Monate in Anspruch. Der letzten Schritt war dann das Mastering welches wir bei Imperial Mastering in Kalifornien in Auftrag gaben. Danach wurde das Ganze zum Label geschickt die dann auch nochmal ein, zwei Sachen geändert haben wollten und so mussten wir es dann leider noch einmal mixen.

J.P: Wir hatten beim letzten Mal schon über euren Stil gesprochen. Damals meintest du es ist einfach der KROSSFIRE Stil. Das kann ich nun noch mehr bestätigen, das neue Album klingt komplett nach euch und ihr habt es auch geschafft nochmal ein paar neue Elemente reinzubringen, war das Absicht?

D.P: Wie schon erwähnt fanden wir bei “Learning to Fly” unseren Stil. Mit “Shades of Darkness” wollen wir alles nochmal verbessern. Angefangen vom Sound, über die Lyrics bis hin zu den Melodien. Der Sound ist etwas heavier und düsterer geworden, was aber absolut unsere Absicht war. Unsere Welt ist halt leider nicht nur sonnig und schön, es gibt auch viel Dunkelheit. Ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist “Annabelle”.

Wir wollten auch mehr Double Bass Drumming, schnellere Songs und mehr orchestrale Sachen und Chöre. Ich denke wir haben das ganze gut hinbekommen.

J.P: Gehen wir mal auf ein paar Songs ein. Für mich sind „The Last Ride”, “King will Come”, “Destiny's Calling”, “Glory to Heavens” und “Heaven Halls” die hervorstechenden Songs. Willst du uns über diese ein bisschen was erzählen? Hast du eigentlich auch irgendwelche Favoriten auf dem Album?

D.P: Die ersten drei Songs haben ein gemeinsames Thema, nämlich die Geschichte der Spanischen Neunten Legion. Dies war Peter's Idee. “The Last Ride” enthält außerdem einige lateinische Chöre um dem ganzen noch mehr Atmosphäre zu verleihen.

“King will Come” handelt von der Arthus Saga. “Destiny's Calling” basiert auf dem Film “Seven Pounds” mit Will Smith. “Glory to Heavens”handelt von dem Kampf zwischen Gut und Böse und dem Tag des jüngsten Gerichts. Und schließlich beschließt “Heaven Halls” unser Album mit einer schönen Liebesgeschicht der Welt von Mittelerde.

J.P: Im Vergleich zu eurem Debütalbum worin unterscheidet sich euer neues Album?

D.P: “Learing to Fly” hatte den typischen Heavy Metal sound mit progressiven Elementen. Mit dem zweiten Album wollten wir einen erdigeren, kraftvolleren Sound. Mehr Double Bass, die Gitarren klingen auch anders, ein bisschen rougher. Auch unsere Lyrics haben sich etwas geändert im Vergleich zum ersten Album. Die Leute werden es verstehen wenn sie unser neues Album hören. “Shades of Darkness” ist ein Power Metalalbum mit progressiven und symphonischen Elementen. Ein großer Schritt für uns als Band!

J.P: Ihr seid ja bei dem deutschen Label Pure Steel Records unter Vertrag. Seid ihr immer noch zufrieden mit eurer Wahl? Wollt ihr dort noch weitere Alben veröffentlichen?

D.P: Mit dem damals unterzeichneten Vertrag haben wir die Option zwei weitere Alben nach unserem Debütalbum “Learning to Fly” zu veröffentlichen. Wir sind nach wie vor sehr zufrieden mit der Zusammenarbeit mit Pure Steel Records und sie froh bei ihnen zu sein.

J.P: Du hast letztes Mal erzählt das es schon hart ist in Bulgarien eine Band zu haben. Hat sich daran in den letzten Jahren etwas geändert? Hat sich die Szene geändert?

D.P: Ich würde sagen ein bisschen hat sich die Metal Scene hier schon verändert. Zum Besseren auf jeden Fall! Es gibt mehr Festivals und Möglichkeiten live zu spielen. Ich denke die Zukunft der Metal Musik hier sieht glänzend aus.

J.P: Dimo wie geht es denn jetzt genau bei KROSSFIRE weiter? Was steht bei dir selbst als nächstes an?

D.P: Eine Tour ist schon geplant und aktuell sind wir auch auf Tour. Aktuell haben wir fünfzehn Konzerte geplant und es gibt weitere Anfragen. Dieses Jahr werden wir auch wieder versuchen außerhalb Bulgariens zu spielen. Polen und Griechenland hoffentlich. Jeden Tag entwickeln wir uns eigentlich als Band und auch persönlich weiter.

J.P: Hi Dimo it’s me Julian from Rock-Garage.com is speaking. Thank you that you answer me again a few questions about your new album and KROSSFIRE itself.
We have already 2012 the pleasure doing an interview, so tell us how was the last years for your band and yourself? What have you done?

D.P: The last years for us were very busy and interesting as well. After “Learning To Fly” we started to gather more and more fans and our fan base increased significantly. We started to have more and more concerts, not only in Bulgaria, but in Greece and Poland as well. We also had the biggest event to date, when we were invited to be open act for DEEP PURPLE concert in our home town Plovdiv. To play in front of 15000 people was amazing and exciting. Meanwhile, we started to work on ideas for our second album, which became “Shades of Darkness”.

J.P: When you looking back at “Learning to Fly” how satisfied are you with the record? Did you increase your fame?

D.P: Definitely. “Learning To Fly” was starting point and very good one. We received many good reviews from Bulgarian and international media, and a lot of fans joined us along the way after that. We found our musical “style” with our first album and we wanted to build on top for our second one, to expand our musical possibilities.

J.P: Did you play live in the last years after the release of your debut? Is it for you the greatest thing to play live?

D.P: Yes, of course. We didn’t stop to play at all. Every year we have around thirty concerts in our tour schedule. Last year we were invited for the first time in Poland to play on big biker’s event. For us is exciting and great pleasure to be on stage and perform.

J.P: Let us look now closer at your new album “Shades of Darkness”. Can you tell us something about the recording process? From when to when you've worked? Why did it take so much time? : ) I heard that you must mix two times?

D.P: The process from initial ideas to actual recording took two and a half years.
Right after the release of “Learning To Fly” in 2012, we started to work on new ideas and until summer of 2014 we were ready. Then we did pre-production of the album. That was necessary, because we wanted to hear from aside how the songs sound. What we might change or improve. We just recorded a demo of the album and spent a while to analyze every song. At the end of September we were ready to enter the studio “F.1Sound” in Plovdiv with sound engineer Vasil Valchev to record it. The recording process took five months to complete. The last stage was mastering the material and we did it in “Imperial Mastering” - California, with engineer Colin Davis.
Then the album was send to label for the final approve. They wanted to change some minor details and that is why we re-mixed it twice.  

J.P: We had talked the last time about your style. At that time you tell me that you have your own KROSSFIRE style. Now when i look back and in fact that i listend to the new record i can confirm that 100 %! The new record is KROSSFIRE pure, but there are a few new elements. Was this purpose?

D.P: After “Learning To Fly” we did found our “style”. For the “Shades of Darkness” we wanted to go further with the sound and lyrics, to become a bit heavier and explore dark themes. It was done on purpose, of course. The world around us is not only white and colourful. There is darkness as well.  And we wanted to explore this side of human nature and supernatural. “Annabelle” is the perfect example of that.  Also, we wanted to have more double bass drumming, fast songs, orchestral and choir. And we did it perfectly.

J.P: Let us look at the songs. For me “The Last Ride”, “King will Come”, “Destiny's Calling”, “Glory to Heavens” and “Heaven Halls”  are the best songs. Can you tell us something about these songs? Are these also your favorite songs on the album?

D.P:  The first three songs in the album are connected with common theme, the story of Legio IX Hispana (Spanish Ninth Legion). This was Peter’s (keyboards) idea. We put also Latin choir to add more pathos in the song “The Last Ride”. “King Will Come” is a natural continuation of the story and appearing of King Arthur. “Destiny’s Calling” is based on the movie “Seven Pounds” with Will Smith. “Glory to Heavens” is about battle between Good and Evil, God and Devil, Armageddon on Earth. “Heaven Halls” ends the album with a beautiful love story from Middle Earth and is a natural extension to the next album.

J.P: What is the difference in your opinion between the last and the new record, what did you think?

D.P: "Learning to Fly" is an album with typical heavy metal sound, with slight progressive elements. With the second album we wanted to achieve much more solid and powerful sound. There are double bass in all, the sound of the guitar is different, a bit hard. That is why we describe the album as gloomy. This applies exclusively to the lyrics. People will understand music when they hear the album. "Shades of Darkness" is a power metal album with progressive and symphonic elements. It is a big step ahead for the band.

J.P: A question to the label situation. You are still under contract by Pure Steel Records an established label in Germany. How satisfied are you with your label choice? How did the contact works and did you plan more releases there?

D.P: According to the contract we have option to release two more albums after “Learning To Fly”. We are very pleased and happy to cooperate with Pure Steel Records and we are proud to be in their portfolio.

J.P: At the last time when we talk you tell me that is hard to play in a metal band in your home country Bulgaria. Did something change in the last year? Did the metal scene change in Bulgaria?

D.P: I would say, yes. The metal scene has changed here a bit. More and more festivals are organizing across Bulgaria and it gives more and more opportunities for underground bands to play. There is a bright future for metal music in our country.

J.P: Dimo what comes next for KROSSFIRE? Is a tour planend? What’s next for yourself?

D.P: The tour is already planned and ongoing. We have more than fifteen concerts already in our tour schedule and more to add. This year also will be concerts outside Bulgaria, in Poland and hopefully in Greece again. We are sorting out the final details now. We all are developing everyday and our personal lives.
